FORTUNE Magazine Ranks Leesburg as a Best Place to Live and Launch

Thursday, July 10, 2008

FORTUNE Small Business magazine has ranked Leesburg, Virginia as one of the Top 100 Best Places to Live and Launch. The list, highlighting towns from across the nation with the best mix of business advantages and lifestyle appeal, is the first of its kind for the magazine.

Leesburg landed respectably in 31st place, only to be surpassed by two other Virginia cities -- Virginia Beach and Charlottesville. "We are very proud and excited to have made the list," said Marantha Edwards, Economic Development Manager for the Town of Leesburg. "To score above 50 is special. To be ranked 31 is outstanding." Special mention was made of Leesburg's natural beauty, scenic parks, and more than two dozen vineyards.

Strong economic growth also contributed to the town's impressive ranking. Leesburg boasts almost 3,000 businesses and welcomed 451 new ones in 2006. While no single industry dominates the town's economy, major industries include healthcare, real estate, retail, construction, and education. Close proximity to Dulles Airport combined with the town's affluence has helped attract a mix of international firms, technology start-ups, retail boutiques, and more recently, a growing medical industry sector. Many of these businesses are located in the downtown historic district, which was named the most picturesque in Virginia by the National Register of Historic Places.

Aside from the scenic beauty and booming economy, Leesburg also offers residents an eclectic and lively mix of culture and entertainment. A variety of restaurants, galleries, and boutiques line the charming brick sidewalks and narrow streets, and weekends often bring live music, performances, and other events to town. Even in the midst of such economic growth, Leesburg has been successful at preserving its heritage, while embracing the advantages of being less than one hour from Washington, DC, and just fifteen minutes from Dulles Airport. It is that unique capability that makes Leesburg, Virginia the perfect place to call home.
